(More customer reviews)In 2001 I saved up a bit and splurged on a 128mb mp3 player made by Bantam that was quite expensive. I added on an SD card and used an old Tape adapter for CD players in my car and hooked up my Cambridge portable speakers for parties and outdoor gatherings. I even bought one of the first Archos 40GB hard drive based media players because I didn't own a laptop and wanted an external drive/large storage media device.
That was fairly cutting edge at the time and since then I moved to an Palm PDA that I stored music and video, then I went through a string of Microsoft smart phones way before the IPod and IPhone came out.
Now just about everyone has an IPhone or other smart phone device and the convergence of phone, internet enabled device, media player, camera and all in one gadget is very commonplace, which makes devices like the archos very niche. The biggest user I can imagine is for a smaller child who is too young for a smart device or cell phone or someone who wants a small, light device for working out or the additional battery time to save draining their smart device.
One nice feature is the radio function, which phones and such don't have, but I'm sure there is an app for streaming radio feeds.
The actual device is very inexpensive and it is easy to store your files. The 8GB storage is pretty small and will limit your options regarding what files you wish to carry, especially video. Controls are intuitive and the small screen is decent, but if you can't stand watching movies on an IPhone or IPod this is 10x worse and is more of a gimmick than an actual feature.
It seems smart phones and even table PC's are really taking over and devices such as this or even laptops are just not as relevant as even 5-10 years ago.
