Purchased the Sony for myself, needed something small to carry around for the summertime while in the subway. Battery life is great, does not last the 40 hours as per Sony but did last about 34 before needing a recharge via USB. If one charges it for about 3 minutes, it holds the charge for about 3 hours, outstanding for folks on the run (like me) and do not have the time to wait for a complete charge. Because of the battery life, you will have to endure a bit of weight due to the rechageable batteries but it does not bother me enough not to use it, at least it is small, about a bit larger than one of those BIC disposeable lighters. The noise cancelling headset is great, I can really tune out my wife now =) The controls are a bit tricky on the unit but after messing around with it for a day or so, it is now easy to use. The display could be a bit larger and brighter as my eyes are getting worse but it is what it is. This player has an equalizer too, not a bad feature and also a FM radio.
Now the reason why I did not give it 5 stars is because of the horrendous software, SONICSTAGE...I downloaded the latest, version 4.3, but it still crashes constantly and then is unable to transfer some of my music from my CDs. Sony has to do better as I read on some forums that have the exact same complaints from other users too. Come on Sony, fix the software issue and you have a killer player here, ipods don't have noise cancelling yet nor do their players battery life last as long as yours, but their software runs circles around yours, do something about it.
